Welcome to Home Economics 10/11/12

 

This year in Home Economics we will be learning many exciting things.  We will be completing assignments, labs and projects on a number of topics including:  sanitation and safety, nutrition, food preparation, menu planning, budgeting, 100 mile diet, water, food/crop sustainability, local agriculture and international cuisines.  Grade 10/11/12′s will get the opportunity to do more work independently and have more input on the content in our food preparation, menu planning and budgeting sections this year.  We will be using many formats to learn new things including individual and group projects, assignments, labs and tests.

 

Students will be able to:

  • v Demonstrate a variety of food-preparation techniques
  • v Demonstrate the appropriate use of basic food-preparation equipment
  • v Apply safe food practices
  • v Prepare food products and meals based on Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating
  • v Demonstrate an understanding of cooking principles
  • v Explain and use food related terminology
  • v Demonstrate the effective use of time
  • v Display a willingness to work co-operatively with others
  • v Apply budgeting principles to meal planning
  • v Design and prepare meals to meet a variety of situations
  • v Demonstrate an ability to manage food resources in various situations
  • v Demonstrate an ability to adhere to standardized clean up procedures

 

Week Plan

Monday – Recipe assigned, previewed, project/assignment work

Tuesday – Lab day

Wednesday – Recipe assigned, previewed, project/assignment work

Thursday – Lab day

Friday – Friday Quiz, global awareness activities, project assignment work

Classroom Expectations Consequences

 

  • v The REAL Matrix (p7 planner) and AESS Code of Conduct (p5 planner) apply at all times

  • v Safety rules must be followed at all times
Loss of cooking privileges and clean up detention
  • v Clean up and unit inspection completed each lab

  • v You will arrive on time
  • a) Less than 5 mins. – make up time after class.
  • b) More than 5 mins. – sign in at office (3 times = ½ hr. detention)
  • v You will arrive prepared (pen, paper, text, current assignment, etc.)

  • v You will complete and hand in assignments on time
Loss of marks (10%/class).  Late assignments will not be accepted after 1 week.
