Welcome to Home Economics 9

 

This year in Home Economics we will be introduced to many exciting things.  We will be completing assignments, labs and projects on a number of topics including:  sanitation and safety, nutrition, food preparation, menu planning, reading recipes, measuring, breakfast, flour mixtures, alternatives to packaged food, gingerbread houses, and budgeting.  In addition, students will complete a simple sewing project.  We will be using many formats to learn new things including individual and group projects, assignments, labs and tests.

 

The students will be able to:

  • v Relate the components of a nutritionally adequate diet to a variety of common eating patterns
  • v Create plans for preparing simple meals, making effective use of resources
  • v Use recipes to prepare food items
  • v Select appropriate equipment to complete food projects and use it in a safe and appropriate manner
  • v Demonstrate an ability to adhere to standardized clean up procedures
  • v Produce simple textile items using patterns and making effective use of resources
  • v Demonstrate safe and appropriate use of tools and equipment needed to produce their textile items
  • v Demonstrate basic sewing techniques
Classroom Expectations Consequences

 

  • v The REAL Matrix (p7 planner) and AESS Code of Conduct (p5 planner) apply at all times
Written assignment to reinforce understanding of the Matrix and Code of Conduct

 

  • v Safety rules must be followed at all times
Loss of cooking privileges and clean up detention

 

  • v Clean up and unit inspection completed each lab

  • v You will arrive on time
  • a) Less than 5 mins. – make up time after class.
  • b) More than 5 mins. – sign in at office (3 times = ½ hr. detention
  • v You will arrive prepared (pen, paper, text, current assignment, etc.)
Written assignment about being prepared

 

 

  • v You will complete and hand in assignments on time
Loss of marks (10%/class).  Late assignments will not be accepted after 1 week.

 

Home Economics 9 will be evaluated as follows:

Labs                                          30%

Assignments/projects                25%

Quizzes/tests                           25%

End of term clean up                  10%

Term notebook                          10%

 

Required Supplies

 

Full apron (with bib)                                     Pen, pencil

Shoe box (gingerbread house in Dec.)

 

Week Plan

 

Monday/Tuesday – Recipe assigned, previewed, project/assignment work

 

Wednesday/Thursday – Lab day

 

Friday – Friday Quiz, global awareness activities, project assignment work

 

Letter grades will be assigned as follows:

 

A       86%-100%

B        73-85%

C+      67-72%

C        60-66%

  • C- 50-59%

F        0-49%
