Welcome to Home Economics 8

 

 

This year in Home Economics we will be introduced to some basic skills needed in the kitchen.  We will be completing assignments, labs and projects on a number of topics including:  sanitation and safety, nutrition, food preparation and menu planning. We will be using many formats to learn new things including individual and group projects, assignments, labs and tests.

 

The students will be able to:

 

  • v describe the essential components of a nutritionally adequate diet
  • v use recipes to prepare food items
  • v demonstrate safe and appropriate use of equipment needed to prepare their food items
  • v demonstrate an ability to adhere to standardized cleanup procedures

 

 

Classroom Expectations Consequences

 

  • v The REAL Matrix (p7 planner) and AESS Code of Conduct (p5 planner) apply at all times
Written assignment to reinforce understanding of the Matrix and Code of Conduct

 

  • v Safety rules must be followed at all times
Loss of cooking privileges and clean up detention

 

  • v Clean up and unit inspection completed each lab

  • v You will arrive on time
  • a) Less than 5 mins. – make up time after class.
  • b) More than 5 mins. – sign in at office (3 times = ½ hr. detention
  • v You will arrive prepared (pen, paper, text, current assignment, etc.)
Written assignment about being prepared

 

 

  • v You will complete and hand in assignments on time
Loss of marks (10%/class).  Late assignments will not be accepted after 1 week.

 

 

Home Economics 8 will be evaluated as follows:

Labs                                         30%

Assignments/projects                25%

Quizzes/tests                           25%

End of term clean up                  10%

Term notebook                          10%

Full apron (with bib)                                     Pen, pencil

Plastic container                                           Scissors

Binder/duotang with 4 dividers                      Pencil crayons/felts

 

Week Plan

 

Monday/Tuesday – Recipe assigned, previewed, project/assignment work

 

Wednesday/Thursday – Lab day

 

Friday – Friday Quiz, global awareness activities, project assignment work

 

Letter grades will be assigned as follows:

 

A       86%-100%

B        73-85%

C+      67-72%

C        60-66%

  • C- 50-59%

F        0-49%
